  12. Writing in the  NATIONAL CAPITAL AREA USER GROUP newletter 
  13. Bytown Bytes, Glenn Brown commented that this was one of the best 
  14. educational program he'd seen. Writing in RESET, Bob Thompson 
  15. reviewed the functions of the program and commented in particular 
  16. on "the excellence of the user interface".

  18. NOTE: This is version 2.0 of the program
  19.       -The  shareware  version of this program only  provides  the 
  20.        data base for Africa.   All other continents and  countries 
  21.        are available by request to the author at a cost of $15.00

  30.        You will receive a double sided disk containing all other 
  31.        continental files, and a complete operation manual.

  36.   This program provides ATARI ST owners with an electronic atlas 
  37. of the world. You can have access to maps of:
  38.  
  39.              THE WORLD            Mollweide Projection
  40.              THE WORLD            Mercator Projection
  41.              NORTH AMERICA        Cylindrical Projection
  42.              SOUTH AMERICA        Cylindrical Projection
  43.              EUROPE               Cylindrical Projection
  44.              AFRICA               Cylindrical Projection
  45.              STATES/ PROV. N.A.   Cylindrical Projection

  47.   For any of these maps you have access to a range of functions 
  48. which are only possible using the rapid analysis and graphic power 
  49. of a computer such as the ATARI ST. You can learn about all the 
  50. countries in the world. Not only are there maps available, but 
  51. there is also a full data base of useful facts concerning each 
  52. country.  There are 20 items of standard information from the 
  53. United Nations office of statistics.

  55.   You will find facts on:
  56.             
  57.              MAJOR RELIGIONS
  58.              MAJOR LANGUAGES
  59.              NAME OF CAPITAL
  60.              POPULATION
  61.              GROWTH RATES OF POPULATION
  62.              LIFE EXPECTANCY  (men and women)
  63.              DOCTORS PER CAPITA
  64.              LITERACY RATES (men and women)
  65.              LAND BASE
  66.              CROP LAND
  67.              AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION
  68.              GNP
  69.              MILITARY SPENDING PER CAPITA
  70.              etc...

  73.   Not only can you view these facts, but you can plot them on the 
  74. maps.  You can also compare countries, search facts to be plotted, 
  75. order lists alphabetically or by size etc..

  77.   All the facts can be displayed on the screen and compared or 
  78. rank ordered between countries.

  80.   You can update facts or insert new information in free fields.
  81. You can also create your own data base without affecting the 
  82. standard base provided with the program.

  84.   Geography Tutor also offers you a Learning mode. In it, you are
  85. asked to point and click to find countries or capitals (at your choice).

  87.   This note and the manual will explain some of the features of 
  88. Geography Tutor. Feel free to experiment with the numerous options
  89. offered in the Main Menu. That is the best way to learn.

  92.                     GEOGRAPHY TUTOR OPERATIONS
  93.  
  94.       -Geography Tutor will work on all ST and MEGA models in        
  95.        Monochrome of Medium Resolution color modes.

  98. Operations:       
  99.       -When you are asked to choose which continent you wish to 
  100.        study a standard files select box will appear on screen. If 
  101.        the continent you are looking for (from the list on page 1) 
  102.        does not appear ,switch to the other disk, and click on the 
  103.        file refresh bar. (The other disk is available from the 
  104.        author)
  105.   
  106.       -The main program disks offers a choice among the 
  107.        following:
  108.             WHOLE WORLD
  109.             AFRICA
  110.             STATES(U.S.A) AND PROVINCES (CANADA) 
  111.             EUROPE        (including European S.S.R.)
  112.             NORTH AMERICA (including Central America and The Carribean)
  113.             SOUTH AMERICA (including Central America 
  114.             ASIA
  115.      
  116.       -The Mouse is used extensively and the functions of each  
  117.        button (or both buttons together) are indicated at the 
  118.        bottom right hand corner of every screen. In general the 
  119.        left mouse button is indicated as <L>, the right as <R> 
  120.        and both as <L+R>. The Escape key <Esc> can always be used 
  121.        to return to the main menu.

  123.       -Double click on "GEOGRAPH.PRG" to start.

  126.                   THE GEOGRAPHY TUTOR MAIN MENU

  128.        -AUTHOR :
  129.             ~AUTHOR ID.       
  130.             ~UP TO 6 ACCESSORIES
  131.        -FILES :
  132.             ~CHANGE CONTINENT   Permits changing to any of the                 
  133.                          available continental or detailed country
  134.                          files.
  135.             ~SHOW WORLD  Shows map of world with identification of      
  136.                          all continents.
  137.             ~ADD FACTS   Permits the addition of facts concerning 
  138.                          any country. There are 20 headings and 
  139.                          four free form note spaces provided.
  140.                          Saving these facts will not  change  the 
  141.                          standard data base. 
  142.             ~CHANGE COLOURS  Permits changing to any land and  sea 
  143.                          colours in medium resolution mode.
  144.             ~QUIT        Will quit normally if no new facts have 
  145.                          been added. Otherwise will query user 
  146.                          about saving new facts entered. If facts 
  147.                          are saved, the program will henceforth 
  148.                          query the user about loading this fact 
  149.                          base whenever this continent is chosen.      
  150.        -LEARNING:
  151.  
  152.             ~POINT AND TELL   Left mouse will identify country and 
  153.                          capital right mouse will give more facts 
  154.                          from data base, both buttons back to menu.             
  155.             ~COUNTRIES   Will quiz user on countries. Keeps total 
  156.                          of right and wrong answers and average score 
  157.             ~CAPITALS    As above but quiz on capitals.

  159.        -COMPARE:
  160.  
  161.             ~SEARCH FACTS    Permits a search of any text or numeric 
  162.                          string. Will then highlight on the map the 
  163.                          countries which satisfy the search criteria. 
  164.                          On request will display all known 
  165.                          information for each country identified in 
  166.                          the search.

  168.             ~FIND SMALLEST   Highlights on the map, the smallest of 
  169.                          any numerical element from the data base. 
  170.  
  171.             ~FIND LARGEST    Highlights largest as above.

  174.             ~RANK ORDER ONE   Compares any chosen country to the 
  175.                         rest or the map for any one of the 
  176.                         numerical elements from the data base. On 
  177.                         request, will then provide a list of all 
  178.                         countries in alphabetical or size  order. 
  179.  
  180.             ~RANK ORDER ALL   Compares all countries of a map and 
  181.                         ranks them by quintile (20% groups). As 
  182.                         above, will also provide an alphabetical or 
  183.                         size order list upon request. (Left mouse 
  184.                         button)
